Dead Space Remake
In a surprising move, EA Motive reveals footage and discusses gameplay decisions early on in development of their Dead Space remake on a Twitch livestream. Beyond simply remaking the game with improved graphics and load times, EA Motive said they wanted to do a livestream in order to gather feedback on the direction they’re taking with the remake. Let’s discuss some of the changes they spoke about:
Isaac will not be a silent protagonist again in this game. They’re bringing the voice actor from the sequels, Gunner Wright, to do lines for the remake. EA made it clear that Isaac would not be a chatterbox, but would speak when spoken to or make a comment in a moment where silence would be more odd than not.
More lore is being brought to bring the first game more up to speed with the others. It’s pretty common for first games to seem more disjointed from an overall series, as most times series aren’t planned until after the initial games success. In the remake, EA plans to incorporate the world building from the books, anime and sequel games to better flesh out the world, while overall not changing the fundamentals of the original story.
They want to flesh out side characters more. Though you spend the first game looking for Isaac’s girlfriend, Nicole, she seems kind of forgotten about at random in the original game. They said they plan to flesh out more the character and reinforce the reason Isaac is there.
Dismemberment is being revamped. Originally a unique method of killing outside of your normal shooter mechanic of headshots being strongest - dismemberment is the way to defeat a necromorph. EA plans to buff and balance other guns to feel more visceral, as well as making weak spots and the damage you do more organic by showing flesh stripped away and bone being shown as the necromorph takes more damage.
Bringing zero gravity to the remake. Absent from the original, but present in the sequels, zero gravity will be implemented into the remake to bring it more in line with the other games and add a more sense of realism and tension.
There will be no microtransactions. You may remember Dead Space 3 having microtransactions because… Reasons… EA Motive has, again, stated that there will be no microtransactions in the remake.
It’s interesting to see EA Motive showing a livestream this early into development. It makes for a show of transparency that’s refreshing, and allows them to get early feedback on the direction they’re taking the remake. It is refreshing to see a game remake happening with care and thought being put into it, instead of being more akin to usual remakes that are just polished graphics and minor balancing.
If you’re a fan of the series, I’d recommend you check out the full hour livestream on Twitch to hear and see the alpha development of the game.
Windows 11 Release Coming Soon
Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 will start rolling out as a free upgrade to some eligible devices starting October 5th. While there will be unique architecture brought to improve gaming on the operating system level, it is important to note that I do not recommend updating right away to the new Windows 11. Operating system launches are notorious for issues, and it’s important to wait for those to be hammered out and a stable version to be released before you decide to upgrade. Microsoft is good about keeping free upgrades out for quite awhile, so you’ll have plenty of time to do the upgrade, but do it with a lot less risk.
With Windows 11, Microsoft has announced several changes to better integrate with gaming:
One simple change is revamping the Microsoft Store UI to be easier for finding apps and games.
They also plan, in the future, to enable Android app support. With this, Android apps and games can be accessible on the PC.
It will also include Auto HDR, which will make for a wider range of brightness and colors for a more vivid image for games built on DirectX 11 or later.
They also plan to include, from the Xbox Series X/S, DirectStorage. This means, if you have a high-perfromance NVMe SSD, that games will be able to quickly load assets to the graphics card without bogging down the CPU, improving loading times.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Shutting Down Some Online Services
Konami has announced that the online services for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are to be terminated for MGS5. As of today, players on those consoles will no longer be able to make purchases within the game, with Metal Gear online DLC content being pulled from sale on November 30th.
Konami also announced that March 1st 2022 they’ll be pulling the game from digital storefronts, with online services then being switched off May 31st 2022. You’ll still be able to access the main campaign and general offline mode content, but the few online things, like the multiplayer, will become inaccessible.
Brandon’s Thoughts: Nothing much to be surprised at with this. MGS5 came out 6 years ago, and we’re already two generations of consoles away from the PS3 and Xbox 360. I really need to try this MGS, as it was widely popular - I just never got around to it.
