TGO Daily | October 6, 2021 | Final SSB:U Character Revealed
✏️ From the Author
Hey there!
I’ve finally watched something somewhat relevant to modern discussion, as I’ve just started viewing WandaVision from Marvel. The first three episodes were super enticing, and I love how creative they’ve gotten with it.
Eventually, I’ll be all caught up with the rest of the world, hahaha!
Until tomorrow,
Adrian
📰 In The News
1. Kingdom Hearts + Super Smash Bros.
The final character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been announced — and its the long awaited Sora, from the Kingdom Hearts franchise. He is the 13th DLC character (89th overall) and will be available for purchase starting October 18th.
Why it’s a big deal: The game’s director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Sora was one of the most requested fighters ever — it even won a fan poll they ran in the Wii U/3DS era.
This is also yet another example of Disney expanding its IP in the gaming world. Smash Bros has been able to cross a lot of borders in the gaming world (similar to games like Fortnite), and it’s really cool that they were able to license a character that many people have nostalgia for.
1.5. Kingdom Hearts heading to Nintendo Switch
On top of Sora’s addition to the roster, Square Enix is going to be bringing three games to the Nintendo Switch:
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re Mind
These are the titles that have also be recently re-released on other platforms.
Unfortunately, it appears as though these are not straight ports, as the titles will only be available for cloud streaming. This isn’t the first time that streaming-only games have been released on the Switch (recent titles include Control and Hitman 3), though I’m sure these ones will come as a disappointment to some folks.
💭Adrian’s Thoughts: It’s great to see Kingdom Hearts making its presence known in another corner of the industry. As poorly received as the last title was, there’s still lots of love for that franchise.
2. Ubisoft announces Ghost Recon Frontline
Ubisoft have announced the newest entry in the Ghost Recon franchise. Frontline is a free-to-play shooter with a variety of game modes, though its first “flagship” mode will be Expedition — 100+ players fighting in teams of three, trying to complete objectives before calling for extraction. It’s essentially their take on a battle royale. The title will be available on all platforms except Switch, with full cross-play.
Here’s more about the game, from Ubisoft:
“Ghost Recon Frontline features an advanced class system and large set of tactical support tools allowing for complete freedom in strategic gameplay, with multiple ways to outsmart enemy teams and win every fight”
Public reception to the announcement has been very negative. That isn’t always an indicator of a game doing poorly when it launches, but its clear that there are different hopes between the publisher and the players. Ghost Recon is a franchise known for very different design concepts, yet they’re marketing to the audience who fell in love with those games.
We’ll see if Ubisoft can finally nail the live-ops multiplayer game they’ve been shooting for.
3. Alan Wake Remastered review roundup
The long-awaited remaster for Alan Wake released today, and reviews are now available.
Critics largely agree that this is just the original Alan Wake experience, upgraded to modern standards (as any good remaster should be, I suppose). The original game’s faults and successes are still present in the remaster. This might be a good excuse to replay the game, or a good reason not to pick it up for a second time.
So should you play it? Well, if you’ve never played it before, it’s probably worth checking out what all the fuss is about. People rave about the game for a reason. On the other hand, there is still some outdated design — there’s some repetition in combat, and enemies will pop up out of nowhere.
For someone who loved the original so much that he’s not sure why they remastered it, read PC Gamer.
For someone who found the original game frustrating, but thinks the atmosphere and story outweigh the negatives, read Polygon.
And here’s a great summary, from IGN:
“Playing Alan Wake Remastered is a bit like taking an old horror hardcover off the bookshelf and wrapping it in a glossy dust jacket; it looks brand new on the surface, but the experience of actually thumbing through it remains the same and some of the edges of of its well-loved pages are starting to look a bit dog-eared. It’s therefore fairly inessential for existing Alan Wake fans, but its consistently menacing atmosphere and clever plot tricks still make for a distinctive survival-horror experience for newcomers – even if the advanced action of Remedy’s most recent game has left poor Alan in its wake.”
