TGO Daily | October 23, 2020 | First Fire Emblem Game Returns!...Temporarily.
I’ve never played Fire Emblem, and I only really started paying attention to it when Three Houses came out in 2019. Should I play any of them? It’s hard to start playing new games when I only have a few hours a week to play games, and I spend it all on Hades.
Today’s newsletter wraps up our week of news. I’ve also now been doing this newsletter for a whole two months! Honestly, it doesn’t feel like that it’s been that long, but I’m happy. There’s somewhere between 50-100 of you who consistently read the newsletter, which is super humbling. Thanks for being here :)
Until Monday,
Adrian
In The News
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light reappears!
Thirty years ago, Nintendo released the first game in the Fire Emblem series: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. It was a smash hit, but it only ever released in Japan. Today, they announced that they will be digitally re-releasing the game on the Nintendo Switch.
It’s currently slated for December 4th, and will cost somewhere around $8. It doesn’t do anything new — you’ll just get the opportunity to play a localized version of the game for the first time.
The kicker? It has a limited release. You will no longer be able to purchase the game after March 31st, 2021. You may recall that they’ve done something similar with Super Mario Bros. 35 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars, both with the same date of final purchase.
Nobody seems to know for sure why Nintendo is doing this, besides creating artificial scarcity to drive sales. Some have speculated that they want to drive results for the final quarter of their fiscal year, but Nintendo is doing better than ever this year. Switches are flying off the shelves!
Let’s hope it’s just an experiment gone wrong, and we’ll never have to worry about it again come the end of March.
Changes to Minecraft accounts
All Minecraft players are going to be required to have a Microsoft account, starting in early 2021. This goes for every version of the game, Java and Bedrock editions alike. Here’s the justification in their blog post:
“Why? Think of it as moving house; when you outgrow one place, you move on to the next. It involves a logistic effort, but once you’re settled in your new home, you realize you’d do it ten times over just for that extra room.”
“Moving to a new home” will allow them to have increase security for accounts, improved parental controls, chat features, and most notably:
“All your PC Minecraft games will be connected to the same account. Currently, that’s Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons, but who knows what we'll do next?”
They reassure players that this won’t influence anything that they love about the Java edition of the game, which still has a sizeable player-base. Those who choose not to migrate their account will be unable to log-in to the game and play it.
What else?
So what else is happening in the world of video games? Well, not too much.
You might want to check out What The Golf?, which just launched on Steam. It’s a ridiculous take on mini-golf, which a lot of people loved on mobile. This version adds a level editor.
Kojima Productions confirmed that they’re working on their next project, but that’s about it.
Costume Quest 2 and Layers of Fear 2 are both free on the Epic Games Store right now. Both are Halloween-suitable games, but with very different tones.
Oh, and if you’re interested in movies, we’ve now got the first screenshot of Tom Holland starring as Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie. This film has been in the works for more than 10 years, so…Hopefully it found a good place to settle.
