TGO Daily | October 14, 2021 | Final Fantasy XIV Outperforms
✏️ From the Author
Hey everyone!
I’ve got just a few stories to talk about today — the rest is either understood by the headline, or is a minor continuation of ongoing stories that I’ve talked about before.
📰 In The News
1. Final Fantasy XIV outperforms
Source: IGN
At a recent preview event for the newest Final Fantasy XIV expansion “Endwalker,” game director Naoki Yoshida revealed that it has surpassed 24 million players, and has become the most profitable game in the franchise.
Originally released in 2010, and re-released in 2013, the game has seen steady growth over the past decade. It had a player count of 4 million in 2015, and 10 million in 2017. This was bolstered by each of their released expansions having critical acclaim upon release.
Why it matters: FFXIV is one of the greatest comeback stories in gaming history. After the critical and commercial failure that was its original release, Yoshida managed to turn it into one of the biggest MMOs in the western market.
💭Adrian’s Thoughts: Their success should speak to the importance of quality and customer relations in live service games. Final Fantasy has benefitted from putting out exceptional content during a time when World of Warcraft is losing players in droves. It also makes it even harder to stomach Destiny vaulting their paid content.
2. Nintendo OLED model sells well
Source: gamesindustry.biz
According to gamesindustry.biz, the Nintendo OLED model has started strong in the UK market:
“Last week was the 14th biggest week for Switch console sales in the UK since the machine launched in 2017. All 13 higher positions are during the peak Christmas and Black Friday sales periods, or the launch week of the Switch itself (which is the fourth biggest week overall).”
Especially interesting is that it has outperformed the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite by a significant margin. Though, the Lite still performed well over time — now accounting for around 20% of Switch sales in the UK.
💭Adrian’s Thoughts: Despite the fairly light upgrades, it looks like their marketing paid off. Releasing it alongside a huge game release in Metroid Dread certainly didn’t hurt either. I look forward to seeing what else Nintendo has in store for the console.
