TGO Daily | October 12, 2021 | FIFA Possibly Re-Branding
✏️ From the Author
Not a lot from the world of video games today! I pulled on an older story with FIFA, and am introducing two newer segments to the newsletter which will hopefully make reappearances in the future.
Cheers for reading. I’m off to eat some more Thanksgiving dinner :)

📰 In The News
1. EA considers a re-brand
Last week, it came to light that EA is considering a re-brand of the FIFA franchise. Their license is expiring next year, and have done some pre-emptive marketing around “exploring the idea” about re-naming. Recent trademarks applications have suggested it could be called “EA Sports FC.”
These series of tweets from games analyst Piers Harding-Rolls explains the situation extremely well, and better than I could:
I think the idea of EA using this as a negotiating tactic is super interesting. I doubt they would go that far, but if it’s already been confirmed then…why not just confirm it?
2. Metroid Dread breaks UK records
Per gamesindustry.biz, the latest entry in the Metroid series has had the fastest selling and highest grossing launch in the UK in the franchise’s history. It rivalled the Metroid Prime release on GameCube, and “three and a half times more copies at launch than the last 2D Metroid Game: Metroid: Samus Returns, which launched on 3DS in 2017, after the Switch had [come] out.”
Considering this a big return to 2D Metroid, and they did a lot of marketing around the simultaneous release of the OLED Switch, I don’t think this is surprising. The Nintendo Switch is one of Nintendo’s strongest consoles ever, and their first party lineup continues to impress.
💭Adrian’s Thoughts: This is great news! Not only was it a critical success, but they can say that Metroid is back in full force.
Explaining the data: Sales data of boxed games in the UK are made available through GfK. GI.biz reports on this data every week, and while it’s only a snapshot of the industry (one country and no digital sales included), it helps indicate how titles as a whole are performing.
📅 A New Segment: Events & Releases!
Hey folks! I think something that can be at least somewhat useful to you with this newsletter is if I keep you up to date with all the different gaming events and releases that are upcoming.
It’s something I’ve been meaning to implement since this newsletter started last year, and I think now is the right time to get it going.
Please let me know if you have any feedback about format or content! I will likely include all significant game events & releases for the next two weeks at the end of each newsletter.
October 12: Back 4 Blood, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (Xbox, Switch), Ori: The Collection (Switch)
October 14: Roblox Developers Conference, The Jackbox Party Pack 8
October 15: Animal Crossing Direct, Crysis Remastered Trilogy, NHL 22
October 16: Minecraft Live, DC Fandome
October 19: Inscryption
October 21: The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
💡 Worth A Look
🕹️Indie Spotlight
You’re going to think I’m silly, but I have been absolutely OBSESSED with a true indie: Super Auto Pets.
A much simpler auto-battler compared to things like Teamfight Tactics, it has won me over in so many ways. I never understood what the appeal of auto-battler games were until I tried it.
I’m SERIOUS. You must at least try it. You can also watch me play it on YouTube:
It’s from a solo developer, as far as I can tell, and it doesn’t have a large following at all. I stumbled upon it thanks to my favourite content creator of the last decade, Northernlion (don’t judge the clickbait thumbnails, he’s a good egg).
I have converted at least two people into SAP players. You should join them.
🔥 Thank You!
