The World Ends With You Sequel + Anime
Square Enix’s The World Ends With You has been a cult classic ever since it originally released on the Nintendo DS in 2007. It had enough of a following to get an enhanced re-release on the Nintendo Switch in 2018, and today, they announced its sequel NEO: The World Ends With You.
Based on the trailer, they’re keeping the comic book aesthetic, but they’re moving it to a full 3D environment. The game remains in the iconic Shibuya of Tokyo, and will feature both new and established characters.
It will arrive in the summer of 2021 on just the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4. No word yet on a PC or next-gen release.
They have also revealed that the anime adaptation (originally announced last July) is now set to premiere in April of 2021 in Japan, with a Western release at a later date. The anime will take its inspiration from the original game.
Yellow Brick Games
A group of gaming industry veterans have begun a new independent company called Yellow Brick Games, and it includes industry legend Mike Laidlaw as the CCO. Laidlaw spent 14 years at Bioware, as the creative director of the Dragon Age series — he also had a heavy hand in Jade Empire.
Laidlaw is joined by CEO Thomas Giroux (founder of a major creative agency in the gaming space), COO Jeff Skalski (Senior Producer at EA and Ubisoft for 13 years combined) and game director Frédéric St-Laurent B. (Game Designer at Ubisoft for 10 years).
Over the past few years we’ve been seeing tons of indie studios formed from highly experienced people in the industry. Usually we don’t hear from them again until their first game pops up 3-5 years afterwards though. Hopefully it all works out for this team!
