✏️ From the Author
Yo! Adrian here again, and I’ll actually be in charge of this shindig for the rest of the week :)
Hope you had a great weekend. There wasn’t a tremendous amount that happened in the gaming world, but that’s typical for weekends. Also, PlayStation had one of the biggest announcement-filled shows of the year on Friday. There were many runoff stories from that event.
I started playing two new games recently. One is a metroidvania called Blasphemous. Not sure how much longer I’ll stick with it, but I definitely see the appeal. Great aesthetic. The other is Pyre, from Supergiant Games. I always meant to try this out, and now that I’m done with Hades I thought I should give it a look.
Stay well, and hope you won’t get sick of me this week!

Apple v. Epic Concludes
The court case between Apple and Epic Games has concluded, and Epic walked away with at least one victory. Starting December 9, Apple is required to allow App Store developers to provide external payment options. Previously, customers could only pay for in-app purchases through Apple’s ecosystem (where they take a 30% cut), which is what caused Fortnite being de-listed from the store in the first place.
Apple came away with some wins as well. The judge agreed that Epic had breached their contract, and forced them to pay Apple more than $12 million. Additionally, the judge ruled that Apple did not have a monopoly within a definable market, which was Epic’s central argument.
The change in external payments will potentially be a big benefit to mobile game developers of all sizes. That’s just one of the ten things Epic was trying to accomplish, however. They still took massive losses in this lawsuit:
If you would like a full rundown of this case (how it started, progressed, and ended), feel free to read the coverage by gamesindustry.biz. They were very comprehensive and helpful in my own understanding of this case.
Analogue Pocket Delayed…Again
Analogue has pushed back the release date for the Pocket once again, now scheduled to ship in December 2021. Originally planned for a 2020 release, and then pushed to October, it has been a rocky start for the retro console. Analogue says that the Pocket will be re-stocked and “shipping immediately” after the holiday season.
Obviously, this is because of COVID related shipping issues. Problems like this and chip shortages have plagued the tech industries ever since the pandemic started last year.
The Pocket natively plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advanced Games. It can also handle Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and Sega Game Gear games through cartridge adapters. Pre-orders are closed, but if you’re interested in getting one in the future, it’s $200 USD.
🕹️PlayStation Showcase Fallout
Here are some stories you might be interested that are follow-ups to the recent PlayStation event.
IGN interviews Cody Barlog and Eric Williams about why they changed directors for God of War: Ragnarok. Lots of interesting tidbits in there about their relationship, working on the first game, and what’s to come with Ragnarok.
I didn’t realize this before, but Amy Hennig and Gary Whitta are working on Forspoken from Square Enix. Both are well known names in the industry, and really makes the game stand out.
Electronic Arts is not involved in the KOTOR Remake. This one will be fully handled by Aspyr and SIE.
