Nintendo FY Financials
Nintendo has recorded its most profitable financial year ever, for the twelve months ending March 31, 2021. Operating profit hit an all-time high of $5.9 billion, which is up 82% year-over-year. The previous high was $4.6 billion. Of course, this profit comes from the increased attention to gaming as a result of COVID.
The Nintendo Switch has now sold a total of 84 million units, which means it has now passed the PSP, Gameboy Advanced, and Xbox 360 in lifetime sales. They expect to surpass the sales of the Nintendo Wii (101 million) by the end of the next fiscal year. 14 million of those units are Switch Lites.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now the Switch’s second best selling title at 32.6 million units sold. That’s trailing Mario Kart 8’s 35.4 million — incidentally, Mario Kart is still a monster seller for them, so they’ll be racing for a while.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury has sold 5.6 million units so far, which means it has already almost matched the lifetime sales of its original release on the Wii U.
Interestingly, only two of the top 10 best-selling games in this period were new. The rest were back-catalogue games.
They reduced their financial targets for the next year, considering the COVID bump from last year, and a generally weaker lineup. So far, they’ve announced Mario Golf Super Rush, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Miitopia.
Heartland Announced
Ubisoft has announced a spin-off to The Division called Heartland. It is a free-to-play standalone title releasing in 2021-22. There will also be a new mobile game released in a similar timeframe.
They didn’t provide any more details, but they did highlight how The Division is starting to become a much larger franchise. Not only are those two titles planned, there is more content heading to the base game this year, as well as a novel and Netflix show planned for the future.
