TGO Daily | March 23, 2021 | Sony Closing Various Stores
March 23, 2021
There wasn’t any hard hitting news today, so instead I’m giving you two stories which haven’t yet been confirmed, but are credible reports from journalists. The grab-bag will give you anything else you might be interested in :)
Cheers,

Sony closing various stores
It is now being reported (with an announcement due this month) that Sony is going to be shutting down the stores for the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PS Portable. After they close this summer, you will be unable to purchase digital games or DLC for those platforms. So if you happen to still play on one of those consoles and want to have a particular title, make sure you download it soon.
This story has brought up a lot of discussions about the importance of games preservation. There are dozens of games in these catalogues which are just instantly being snapped away — and Sony isn’t particularly keen on bringing back old games. While I don’t officially endorse emulation, preservation seems like one of its biggest justifications.
Discord getting sold
According to VentureBeat, Discord is currently suiting up to sell the company to a major corporation for over $10 billion. Multiple parties have apparently already expressed interest.
The big question for Discord is whether or not they can leverage themselves better under another company, or by going public on the stock market. As VentureBeat explains:
While Discord has grown dramatically and has more than 140 million monthly active users, it is still in a growth phase, and its financials aren’t spectacular now. That means it may be early for the company to try to go public, the source said.
Discord has turned down acquisitions as lately as 2018, for somewhere between $2 billion and $6 billion. They turned it down because buyers wanted them to do things they didn’t, such as include advertising in the app.
If you’re interested in reading further I highly recommend the article I linked above, they did some good reporting.
