TGO Daily | Thursday June 10, 2021
It’s Thursday and we’re kicking off with the Summer Game Fest today! The show will be at 11am PST / 2pm EST / 6pm GMT. For those of you interested you will be able to watch direct from their website.
Today is also my BFFs birthday! A big happy birthday to you, Kate!
Quite a Thursday in store for me. Not too much news today as to be expected with E3 this close. I’ll be back tomorrow to cover the big news from the Summer Game Fest show.
Until next time,
Brandon
Battlefield 2042 Trailer Released
The reveal trailer for Dice’s Battlefield 2042 has officially dropped. Along with the trailer, we’ve had some confirmation on some things we can expect to see in the game.
Battlefield 2042 will be following in the footsteps of other FPS giants and will not be including a campaign. In place of this, narrative will be driven by the world and maps you play on, and through the stories and eyes of specialists. Specialists are Dice’s mix-up of their normal class design. They will be named hero characters with their own abilities and traits complementing the usual Battlefield class system. Dice says they plan on continuing the narrative of the game as time passes and new specialists are introduced.
The multiplayer will support up to 128 players on the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X versions of the game, with the PS4 and Xbox One supporting up to 64 players. Dice appears to be leaning into their destruction mechanics, as they will also be featuring natural disasters and climate change within the game, though we’ll have to wait for more specific details on how this mechanic will play out in-game. They also confirmed that they don’t currently have any plans to introduce a battle royale mode to the game.
A gameplay reveal is slated for June 13th. Battlefield 2042 will be coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X October 22nd. Check out the reveal trailer if you’re a fan of the series or FPS in general. They made a pretty fun trailer with some ‘stereotypical’ Battlefield moments you’d see in multiplayer.
Overwatch Adding Cross-Play
Cross-Play between consoles and PC is now coming to Overwatch. For cross-play to work, the player must have a Battle.net account and, if on console, that account will need to be connected to the account you use on that console. Check out their FAQ for more specifics on how to connect the accounts.
As there can be discrepancies in aiming between console and PC players, Blizzard has enacted some rules to help combat those kinds of problems. PC players will be matched with a mix of console and PC teammates and enemies. However, for console players, their default is to match to other console players (this can be changed). Console will also have the option to disable cross-play in their settings - a feature unavailable to PC.
While those changes will affect quickplay and other game modes, competitive mode will still keep players on console and PC separated. A specific date was not announced for the update containing cross-play - Blizzard is currently just saying, “soon”.
Call of Duty: Vanguard & The Division are Skipping E3
Announcements of games that we won’t see at E3 continue to trickle in. The latest big titles that won’t be shown at E3 are Ubisoft’s The Division series and this year’s Call of Duty title from Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Call of Duty will be having an in-game event reveal in Warzone (which they also did for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War last year) later in the summer. Ubisoft announced they won’t have any updates on content for The Division 2 or any news on the upcoming Division spin-off - The Division Heartland.
I know the news of what we won’t be seeing can be upsetting if you had your hopes set on a specific title coming. Honestly, it’s better that developers are setting expectations of their anticipated titles that we won’t be glimpsing. It’s far less painful to hear about it before the show, than to sit through an hours-long event hoping the next one will be the one you want and then being let down again and again until it ends. The best advice I can give is to watch the shows that interest you, instead of watching an entire one waiting for a single announcement. Don’t get fatigued from the many shows E3 has got coming down the pipeline!
