TGO Daily | Tuesday June 1, 2021
Greetings everyone, Brandon here!
I want to start off my first introduction with an excited hello from me to you! I’m ecstatic to be here contributing what I can to the amazingness that is The Gaming Observer. This is a dream come true and I can’t express how happy it makes me to be here writing this to you!
In my future introductions you’ll get to learn a bit more about me and I sincerely hope to learn more about you along the way! One of my goals with these newsletters is to separate the content that is just the news from the content that is me and my opinion. In my introductions it’ll be me talking to you about anything and everything! In my stories I’ll sometimes include my own thoughts in the final paragraph as well. My goal is to always make it clear if it’s the news talking or ‘ol Brandon attempting this new thing called ‘humor’ I only just learned about.
Until next time,
Brandon
CD Projekt Q1 Financials
Written by Adrian Briski
CD Projekt reported on their Q1 financials today, and they paint an interesting picture of the current state of the company. For the three months ending March 31, they brought in $53.9 million USD in sales (up 2% year-over-year) and close to $9 million in profit (down 65% Y-O-Y).
The company’s previous fiscal year was its biggest, tripling their previous profit record thanks to the release of Cyberpunk 2077. They weren’t able to keep that momentum going, considering the launch disaster which involved the title being delisted from the PlayStation store.
On one hand — this quarter is competing with a strong Q1 from last year. The Witcher franchise skyrocketed in popularity thanks to the Netflix series, and the release of The Witcher 3 on the Nintendo Switch was very strong for them. On the other hand — they recently released what was supposed to be one of the biggest games of the decade.
CD Projekt tried to follow the Hollywood model of making films: high budget, extremely high reward. Instead they belly flopped, and will have to make a No Man’s Sky-esque turnaround in order to turn this into something positive.
Pokémon Company Financials
Written by Adrian Briski
For the first time ever, The Pokemon Company shared their financial statements with the public. For the 12 months ending February 28, 2021, they reported $1.1 billion USD in sales and $254 million in profit. According to them, this is a record year for the company.
As a private entity, The Pokemon Company have no obligation to share their financials. It is an organization with three key stakeholders: Nintendo, Game Freak (mainline Pokemon game creators), and Creatures (Pokemon TCG and side games).
Considering the year upcoming for this franchise, they’re likely to break their record again. The first open-world game with Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Brillian Diamond / Shining Pearl are bound to be successful. Not to mention the already released New Pokemon Snap.
Griftlands Exiting Early Access
Griftlands, a deck-building rogue-like game, has officially moved out of Early Access. It launches June 1st on PC and will launch June 4th on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch for the first time.
The game is developed by Klei Entertainment, who you may know as the studio behind Mark of the Ninja, Oxygen Not Included, and the Don’t Starve series. It’s currently on Steam with 96% positive reviews. For those of you interested in deck-building games, with some role-playing elements, this may be a game you’ll want to check out!
Watch Dogs: Legions Unleashes the Undead…Legions?
New DLC for Watch Dogs: Legions is releasing June 1st alongside Title Update 4.5. Watch Dogs: Legion of the Dead pits up to four players against a horde of the undead. Players will have to survive making their way around the streets of London, completing certain objectives and then reaching the extraction zone within a time limit. The mode is still in alpha and will only be available on PC for now. Ubisoft’s Jean-Pascal Cambiotti, the online director for Watch Dogs: Legion, made it clear in an interview with IGN that things will be tweaked and changed as player feedback comes in.
The update will also include quality of life improvements, a 60 FPS mode for consoles, and the ability to play with friends in the same console family – Xbox One players with Xbox SeriesX/S, and PS4 players with PS5. If you’re a fan of Watch Dogs: Legion, you can get more info on upcoming updates via Ubisoft’s roadmap.
