You may remember in a previous newsletter where I spoke about how excited I was for Pokémon Unite to release (this is that League of Legends type of Pokémon game). When I first spoke about it, the release date we had was “some time in July”. Well, we’re getting close to halfway through July and there’s been no news on when it’s releasing still! I’m so eager to play and I just need a time, Nintendo! I have hopes it’ll be the multiplayer game to distract me for some time as I continue to wait ever so patiently for Ashes of Creation to release… Oh, how patiently I wait…
Until next time,
Brandon
Sony State of Play
The State of Play didn’t bring us anything groundbreaking, but the 30-minute show did provide some more looks at some really cool looking titles. The spotlight was very much on Deathloop, which took up a third of the show. Let’s break down some of what we got to see.
Closing out the State of Play as the main event is Arkane Studios (Prey, Dishonored) latest title, with 9 minutes of gameplay video. In Deathloop you play as an assassin trapped in a time loop on an island. Your mission is to eliminate eight targets before the day ends or time will loop and put you right back at the start. The objective of the game is then to learn more during each run through of a day and slowly get further and further in your goal of eliminating all your targets before the day runs out.
The style of the game, and even some powers, are very much inspired by Arkane’s work on the Dishonored series, so if you’re a fan of that then this is a game you should definitely be on the watch for. The game will arrive September 14, 2021 for PlayStation 5 and PC.
The Directors Cut brings us new weapons, delivery support gear (like a cute little carrier robot), and new story missions. Surprisingly enough, the game is also adding a racing mode dubbed the ‘Fragile Circuit’.
With the added items, weapons, and story missions it’s a good time to get the game if you were wanting to play it but haven’t gotten to it yet. The Directors Cut will arrive to the PS5 on Septermber 24, 2021.
The sequel to the widely applauded PlayStation VR game, Moss, will be picking up right where it left off in its story. Many critics loved the first game, which currently is sitting with a 96% recommendation on OpenCritic.
The design director at Polyarc, Josh Stiksma, said that the sequel will feature more time behind the controls of Quill, along with new environments, enemies, and puzzles. There is no release date that has been announced.
There were other interesting titles announced as well that I think you should definitely check out if you’re interested!
Arcadegeddon - A colorful third-person multiplayer shooter for PlayStation 5 and PC. I’m getting some very lowkey Splatoon vibes from this one.
Tribes of Midgard Season 1: The Wolf Saga - This survival action RPG somewhat reminds me of Path of Exile with a lot more color.
Sifu - A third person hand-to-hand combat fighting game from the developers of Absolver. I really loved that game and I’m looking forward to this one.
JETT : The Far Shore - A space exploration and adventure game. The mechanics look intriguing, as it doesn’t center around resource excavation or combat.
F.I.S.T. - We got to see another trailer showing more of the 2D combat. The style looks nice and I like the way they incorporate 3D elements to add layers to the 2D combat.
Demon Slayer - Sega’s latest game gives fans of the anime/manga an opportunity to experience first hand battles from the ‘Unwavering Resolve Arc’ and ‘Mugen Train Arc’.
Lost Judgment - This Yakuza detective spin-off fits right in with a different style of focus, but is still very much Yakuza at heart.
Resident Evil Village Sales Exceed 4.5 million
The latest Resident Evil game in the series, Village, has surpassed 4.5 million copies sold. This puts the entire franchise over 100 million total units sold combined. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard released in 2017 and is currently sitting at 9 million units sold. Village is currently on the path to outsell Biohazard and become the best-selling game in the series.
In related Resident Evil news, the 4-part Netflix series, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, has officially released. The series covers fan-favorites Leon and Claire as a certain viral infection (hmmm) ravages the White House. The voice actors from the Resident Evil 2 remake reprise their roles as the main characters for the series.
Brandon’s Thoughts: It’s a great time to be a Resident Evil fan! I’m actually not much of one myself, as zombies spook me too much, but I can’t help but feel excited for those who are fans of the series. Biohazard seemed like a great revitalization of the series. With the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake and now the rousing success of Village, it’s a great time to become a fan of the series. Couple a Netflix animated movie with it and you’ve got yourself quite a stew! Maybe I’ll give the show a try and go from there. As long as I watch it during the day…

How China's political influence is changing game development | GamesIndustry.biz
A truly wonderful read of an article. A lot has happened with China, especially in recent years, and they have a large amount of influence and power in the industry. With how much power they have, it’s vitally important we understand how much they’re influencing the gaming environment.
A really powerful quote from a Taiwanese developer in the article, “[Our game's] story [contain themes of] government brainwashing... and we are already prepared that if the government reviewer says it is not suitable, we will cut off the story and make it a plain rhythm game.”
