Nintendo Financials
Consolidated results for the nine months ending December 2020
Nintendo has had a strong nine months, hitting $13 billion USD in revenue, up 37% year-over-year. Their operating profit was $5 billion, up 98% Y-O-Y.
The Nintendo Switch is now their fifth best selling console in history, having recently surpassed the 3DS with close to 80 million lifetime units shipped. It will almost certainly surpass the Game Boy Advance (81.5 million), and probably the Nintendo Wii (101.6 million). Here’s a peak at the best selling consoles of all time:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has shipped a total of 31 million units, which means they’ve sold around 6 million copies since September. That makes it their second best selling Switch game (close behind Mario Kart 8) and the 15th best selling game of all time (of data available).
Sales were also driven by other new releases like Paper Mario: The Origami King (3 million), and Super Mario 3D All-Stars (8.3 million).
Google Stadia Shuts Down Internal Studios
Google Stadia is officially shutting down their internal studios which were developing games exclusively for the product. They had two studios located in Montreal and Los Angeles, with around 150 employees across them both. They did not release any games before shutting down.
Stadia itself will remain in operation, offering third party titles and perhaps some externally developed exclusives (the future of that remains unclear). They also may be pursuing partnerships where other companies can use the Stadia tech to offer their own streaming services.
Google has struggled to find a footing on Stadia, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction. They’re still going to struggle against products like xCloud and Luna when it comes to things like pricing.
PlayStation on Xbox
For the first time in a long time, a Sony developed game is going to be arriving on Xbox. MLB The Show has pretty much been the only baseball simulation game to hit the mainstream over the past decade, and it has lived on the PlayStation the whole time. This April, it arrives on the Xbox One and Series X, on top of the usual PlayStation consoles.
The game will have cross-play, so you can play with your friends. It will also have cross-generation save compatibility, but will not have a free upgrade, so you’ll need to buy it twice if you want it on different generations. You can buy both at once if you pick up the collector’s edition.
